Victoria Park Pride and remembering Sandra Docking

5 July, 2025 | Local action

I had a great time, along with other Green Party activists and local residents, at the Victoria Park Pride Picnic on Sunday 29 June.

The Bandstand season happens every year in Victoria Park and sees locals come together to enjoy music, (hopefully) good weather and our beautiful park. The Pride event also is an annual fixture of the bandstand season and is championed by members of the Victoria Park Friends committee.

This year was particularly special because we held a memorial for Sandra Docking MBE, a pivotal member of the committee who passed away in September 2024. Sandra was a fantastic organiser for the Victoria Park Friends, but was also an energetic campaigner for and member of the the LGBTQIA+ community. Sandra set up the LGBTQIA+ network for the Ministry of Defence where she worked, and was awarded an MBE in 2010.

A bench with a plaque was unveiled at the event on 29 June and locals are encouraged to visit and rest a while reflecting on Sandra’s incredible gifts of time and energy to our community. The location of the bench is: https://w3w.co/brief.worker.state

Finally, it was powerful to attend the pride event and show ally-ship and support for all members of the LBGTQIA+ community. As one of the performers said, Pride will continue to be a protest until we achieve true equality and acceptance of all types of sexualities and gender identities. I couldn’t agree more.
