Tower Hamlets residents’ survey a cause for hope

28 August, 2024 | Council-level work

After the recent violence and disorder seen on streets across the country, I wanted to return to the results of the 2023 Tower Hamlets Annual Residents Survey.

This year’s survey has some amazing good news about how people in our borough feel we are getting along together.

About the survey

Every year, Tower Hamlets Council does a residents’ survey. The respondents are carefully chosen to reflect all the diversity of the borough and the interviewers had people on hand who spoke relevant community languages to ensure everyone could contribute.

The 2023 survey is the first since COVID which is comparable to the results from 2019 because of changes made to the methodology during the pandemic.

The survey is conducted by an external body to avoid bias and benefit from top industry expertise.

2023 Headlines

Since 2019, there has been a 9% increase to 86% in those who feel Tower Hamlets is a place where people from different backgrounds get along well together.

Since 2019, there was an 8% increase in people saying they feel safe in their local area both during the day and after dark.

There was a 16% drop in people experiencing vandalism graffiti or other deliberate damage to property or infrastructure in their local area.

Residents were 8% more likely to say that they are satisfied with their area as a place to live since 2019.

Summary

I think there is a lot to be hopeful about in Tower Hamlets, particularly as an example of a place where different people live alongside each other in harmony. This survey confirms that our community broadly agrees with me, and I’m so pleased to have this regular survey to measure how we are doing.

There is always more to do, but I think this survey shows that we are on the right track!
