Sian Berry AM pushes Sadiq Khan on Tower Hamlets LTNs

13 October, 2023 | Council-level work

Green London Assembly Member, Sian Berry, has highlighted that London Mayor Sadiq Khan can and should step in to prevent Lutfur Rahman from removing vital Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in Tower Hamlets.

At Mayor’s Question Time on Thursday 12 October 2023, Sian Berry AM highlighted that the London Mayor Sadiq Khan has powers under the Greater London Authority Act which allows him to override borough councils’ decisions.

Liveable Streets schemes were implemented in Tower Hamlets with funding from TfL as part of a London-wide strategy towards healthy streets.

Sian Berry urged Sadiq Khan to not sit on the sidelines while borough councils take decisions which go against the London-wide strategy to reduce air pollution and improve road safety.

Khan responded to Berry’s question saying that he believes in the importance of decentralised decision making, and thus would be very wary about using his GLA act powers in this case.

Berry has followed up on the question with a letter to the London Mayor requesting that he look again at what his powers are to step in in Tower Hamlets.

The full question, response and background can be seen on the London Assembly website here: https://www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/what-london-assembly-does/assembly-member-press-releases/will-mayor-stand-healthy-streets-londoners

This action by Sian Berry AM is really welcomed by us in Tower Hamlets! This is just one of the steps in the long road to preventing Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman from removing vital low traffic schemes in the borough. Campaigners are also ready to launch a judicial review, and sit in front of bulldozers if it comes to that.
